What surprises you when you started
dating a Japanese?
日本人とデートしてびっくりしたことは？

Two month into a relationship, I agreed to go
"picking fruit" with my girlfriend
who said she knew a good place. When we arrived
at the farm she headed straight for the front
door where she proceeded to introduce me to
her parents, who seemed to be dressed up a little
too much to have been out in the field. Only
after being told they had been expecting me
and they sat expectantly round an exceptionally
well-laden dinner table did I realize I had
been the victim of a marriage plan. My subsequent
display of international diplomacy should have
bagged me a job at the embassy.
付き合って2ヶ月目、彼女のお勧めという果樹園に「果物狩り」にいっただけのはずなのに、何故か彼女はまっすぐ玄関のほうへ。それからすっかり正装した彼女の御両親が現れ、お待ちしていました、とご馳走が並べられたテーブルに連れて行かれた。そこで初めて、結婚計画の餌食にされかかっている自分に気がついた僕。そこから先の僕の外交手段は大使館から仕事が殺到してもおかしくないね。

eating soba. Everybody there was making so much
noise that I thought I should adapt to the Japanese
custom and made as mush noise as I could. I
made a pretty good noise. It was a lot of fun

the driver her address, only to receive a phone
call an hour later from perfectly sober girl

日本人の女の子の「デートテクニック」に疎かったころ、酔っ払った彼女をタクシーに乗せて、運転手に彼女の住所を渡して帰したんです。そしたら1時間後、完全に素面の彼女から電話がかかってきて、あんたって本当に「使えない」わね！と言われた･･･。

Every time my girlfriend laughed, she put her
hand over her mouth. I thought she had a cavity
or something. It turned out that she had a piece
of seaweed between her teeth. I married her
after that.
笑うときいちいち口をおさえていたから、歯に虫歯か何か問題があるのかと思ったよ。よーくみると、歯に海苔がついていた（笑）彼女とはその後結婚したよ。

me to marry him. I had no plans to get married,
and didn’t expect that our relationship would
last so I said that we could think about it
later. I wanted a few more month before I said
“yes”. Generally in Canada we date for a few
months or years before we think of marriage!
今の婚約者との始めてのデートで、結婚を申し込まれたこと。結婚は考えていなかったし、そんなに長続きするとも思っていなかったので、とりあえず考えましょうといって、承諾するまでに数ヶ月待ちました。ちなみにカナダでは結婚を考えるまでに普通、数ヶ月から須年をかけるものなんですけれどねー。

I have had many surprises… Well, instead of
telling my stories, I’d like to give a few comments
to Japanese men who want to have a good relationship
with a foreign woman. Never say “I love you”
on a first date. It was scary! Two weeks is
too long to wait before calling after a woman
gives you her number. And don’t wait until late
in the evening to see what she is doing. Make
plans. She will be happier. There are some really
cool things about Japanese men though… They
usually try to look nice on a date and always
bring you presents, and you can probably wear
his clothes and may even want to!
びっくりさせられたことは多々あるけれど･･･具体例のかわりに、外国人女性と上手くお付き合いしたい日本人男性にちょっとご忠告。初めてのデートで「I
love you」は言わないで。だって怖いでしょう？彼女から電話番号をもらってから電話をするまで、2週間も待つなんて長すぎます。そして、何してるかなーと電話をくれるのはいいんだけれど、夜更けまで待たないこと。計画を立てること。きっと、そのほうが彼女に喜ばれます。でも日本人の男性とデートをするのって、いいことたくさんあるんですよ。デートではいつもきちんとした格好をして、プレゼントを持ってきてくれるし、それに小さいから彼の服を借りて着られるしね。
