Interviews with International Teams
at the Snow Festival "Who are you, anyway?"
雪祭りで、雪像製作中のインターナショナルチームに聞きました。 「ところで皆さん、本職は？」
New Zealand
"I'm a full-time sculptor. All year long
I sculpt marble, stone and bronze, as well as
snow and ice. We don't have a snow festival
like this yet, but we are now organizing one
in Queensland. We're paying our travel expenses
ourselves now. Hopefully, we could invite a
team from Sapporo."

「本職は彫刻家。普段は大理石、石、ブロンズなんかを彫ってるけど、 雪や氷を彫ることもある。こういう雪祭りはニュージーランドにはないけど、今クイーンズランドで開催できるよう進めているところ。今回の旅費は全て自分持ち。将来はこっちが札幌からチームを招待できるようになればいいね。」

USA
"This is my third event. America has come
here every year for 28 years. Everybody on our
team has a different job. I'm a store manager.
As for our other members, there is an eye doctor,
someone working at a travel office, and every
other kind of job. We use our vacation time
for this. We pay our traveling expenses ourselves,
just like the Olympics. The American government
doesn't pay."

「これで参加は3回目。アメリカチームは28年間毎年来ているんだよ。メンバーの本職はバラバラで、私はショップマネージャーだし、あとは眼科医もいれば旅行会社で働いているのもいる。ここには自分の休暇を使って来てるよ。旅費も自分持ち。オリンピックと同じで、アメリカ政府は出してくれないからね。」

Thailand
"I'm an artist in Thailand, painting and
carving sculptures. So, basically, it's my profession.
The government pays for our trip here, for three
of us. We don't have to pay."

「タイではアーティストで、絵も描くし彫刻も彫る。だから基本的にはこれ（雪像）も自分の専門内かな。メンバー3人分の旅費は政府が出してくれてる。自分では払わなくてもいいんだ。」

Hong Kong
"I'm a chef. I cook Western meals. All
three of us are chefs, and we have worked together
for quite a while. We usually work at hotels
or convention centers. We are sponsored by the
Hong Kong Tourist Association and Hotel Association.
It's a part of the government."

Guam
"It's my first time in Sapporo. We are
art teachers and wood carving artists. It's
my first time to sculpt with snow! I usually
carve wooden canoes. It's a completely different
skill. The tools we have are for making canoes,
so we're having a very hard time here carving
ice!"

「札幌は初めて。メンバーは美術教師と木彫り職人。でも雪を彫るのは初めてだよ！いつもは木のカヌーを彫ってるんだ。必要な技術はまったく違うし、カヌーを作る道具で彫ってるけど、氷は彫りにくくてしょうがないよ！」

"It's my first year in Sapporo. I'm from
Grenoble, France. I'm a college professor in
France. I teach manufacturing. We have to pay
by ourselves. It's very difficult to find sponsors.
We worked a long time to find a sponsor, but
no luck."

「初めての札幌です。グルノーブルから来たんだけど、本職は大学教授。いつもは工業を教えてます。旅費は自分持ち。スポンサーを見つけるのは大変でね・・・ずいぶん探したんだけど、ダメだったんだ。」

Australia
"We're all exchange students, all seven
of us, in and around Tokyo. The team was put
together by the Australian Embassy. We have
a lot of sponsors from Australian businesses.
The main one is Aussie Beef. We got lot of beef,
and Two Dogs, which is also our sponsor. I'm
going to Keio University, and the other one
right here is going to Chiba University. Actually,
I just finished my final report the morning
I flew to Sapporo. Some of us had to change
a few exams to come up here. Ken over there
changed six exams! But most of the teachers
are pretty supportive. It's just a fantastic
experience... a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

「7人全員、東京エリアの大学に通う交換留学生。オーストラリア大使館がチームを編成したの。オージービーフやTwo
Dogsなど沢山の企業がスポンサーになってくれて、ビーフなどの差し入れもいっぱい。私は慶応大学で、彼女は千葉大。実は、課題のレポートが終わったのって、札幌に発つ日の朝だったんだよね（笑）。ここに来るために試験をいくつかずらさなきゃいけなかった人達もいるし。あそこのKenなんて、6つも試験ずらしたのよ！でも、ほとんどの先生は協力的。だって、こんな素晴らしい体験ができるチャンスは、一生に一度しかないでしょ？」
