Why I had a fight with my Japanese girlfriend

Sam, English Teacher
Whilst out driving with my girlfriend, I was frustrated by the bad habits of Japanese drivers and my subsequent remonstrations began to question not only the behaviour of the motorists, but also that of the nation as a whole! Understandably, my girlfriend was not happy with me insulting her fellow countrymen and proceeded to storm out of the car and walk the rest of the way home. Several years have now passed and although the driving hasn't improved and my protests are still as strong, the girlfriend has since become my wife and learnt to ignore me!

Whenever my girlfriend cooks, she makes me say "Itadakimasu", "It's good", or "This is delicious". In Taiwan, there's no word meaning "Itadakimasu" and instead of those words, we usually express our appreciation towards the cook by having another bowl of rice, washing the dishes or buying dessert. She couldn't understand those gestures and we have often had fights. Even though we are now happily married, we still have the same old argument occasionally.

Touche, English Teacher, Canada

I was going with a girl for a few weeks who was great but she insisted that I make all the decisions. Whatever restaurant we went to or whatever food we'd eat would always be up to me. Finally on one such evening I said that from that point on, my NEW rule was that she couldn't say, 'Anything's okay,' anymore when asked what she wanted to do. She got angry and said that if my rule was that she had to think of somewhere to go, HER new rule was that we wouldn't go to rundown drinking establishments anymore...

Serguei, Student, Russia
When my female friend got late for her dorm's curfew, I asked my girlfriend's permission for my friend to spend the night at my place. She said it was OK, and my friend spent the night and went home the next morning. But six months later, my girlfriend brought it up again saying, "How could you have another girl spend a night at your place." I was shocked because I thought she had already understood the situation...six months ago! We got into a big argument in the car, and she got out and left. I was so angry I punched the windshield of my car. We made up eventually, but my windshield still bears a spider's web-like crack!
